Original MAC vs Fake MAC Makeup: A Side-by-Side Comparison for Bangladeshi Buyers
MAC Cosmetics is one of the most desired makeup brands in Bangladesh. The brand's reputation for professional-grade pigmentation, long-wearing formulas, and iconic shades like Ruby Woo and Velvet Teddy has made it a staple for makeup enthusiasts and professionals alike.
It has also made it one of the most counterfeited cosmetic brands globally. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) reports that cosmetics and personal care products are among the top categories of counterfeit goods traded internationally. In Bangladesh, where the counterfeit market occupies an estimated 40% of consumer goods, MAC fakes are not the exception. They are the norm on most retail shelves.
We purchased fake MAC products from local markets and compared them against originals sourced from official MAC stores. Here is what we found.
The Packaging: Where Fakes Fail First
Original MAC Lipstick
The original MAC lipstick bullet has a satisfying weight. The cap clicks shut with a firm, magnetic snap. The MAC logo on the bottom is cleanly embossed, not printed. The label lists the shade name, net weight, batch code, and manufacturing origin. The bullet itself is uniformly moulded with no seams or rough edges.
Fake MAC Lipstick
The counterfeit is noticeably lighter. The cap fits loosely and may wobble. The logo is either printed on (not embossed) or the embossing is shallow and uneven. The label may misspell 'Cosmetics' or list an incorrect net weight. The bullet mould often has visible seams or a slightly crooked shape.
The Formula: Where It Really Matters
Original MAC Matte Lipstick
MAC's matte formula is known for its creamy application that does not drag across lips. One swipe delivers full, opaque colour. The finish is genuinely matte without being drying. It wears for 4-6 hours with minimal transfer once set. The scent is MAC's signature vanilla fragrance, subtle and consistent.
Fake MAC Matte Lipstick
The fake requires multiple swipes for uneven colour payoff. The texture feels waxy or slippery rather than creamy. Within 1-2 hours, it either fades completely or bleeds outside the lip line. The scent is often overly sweet, chemical, or entirely absent. Some counterfeit lipsticks have tested positive for unsafe levels of lead and other heavy metals, according to studies published in the Journal of Environmental Science and Health.
The Foundation Test
Original MAC Studio Fix Fluid
The original MAC Flawless Liquid Foundation has a fluid, buildable consistency. It blends seamlessly and matches the shade shown on the bottle. Coverage is medium to full with a natural, skin-like finish. It does not oxidise significantly throughout the day.
Fake MAC Foundation
Counterfeit foundation is often thick and chalky. The shade rarely matches what the label indicates, typically appearing more orange or grey on South Asian skin tones. It oxidises within hours, changing colour noticeably. Blending is difficult, leaving streaks and patches. The product may separate in the bottle.
Price as a Verification Tool
An original MAC Matte Lipstick retails for BDT 4,500-5,500 when sourced internationally. The MAC Flawless Foundation ranges from BDT 7,000-9,000. If a local seller is offering these at BDT 500-1,500, you are not getting a deal. You are getting a counterfeit made with unregulated chemicals in an unlicensed facility.
